There are plenty of things that can cause damage to brand new carpeting. A lot of people, when they have carpeting installed for the first time, admonish their family, especially children, not to bring any food or drinks into the room with the new carpeting. The last thing they want is to have a spill that causes a stain or other problems.
Animals might have accidents on the carpeting, a child could spill milk, an adult could spill wine, or something else can happen to cause a stain that may damage the carpet permanently. One thing that is commonly overlooked happens to be water.
Believe it or not, water can actually cause damage to carpeting over time. It isn’t going to cause the same type of damage as spilling red wine, for example, or grape juice, but it’s important to get up as much of the water that was spilled as quickly as possible.
What water does to carpeting.
When water sits deep in the carpet pile and on the foam underpadding, and it is not dried as quickly as possible, it can lead to mold and mildew. Once mold and mildew begins to form, even though the foam and carpeting may dry out, when moisture gets back into the air, it can rejuvenate the mold and mildew.
Over time that can create a musty smell that may be difficult to remove. So if a bottle of water was spilled on the carpeting, use a dry cloth or a series of paper towels and blot the area, pressing down as far as possible to ensure that you get as much of the water up as you can. Then run a fan blowing over the area to help dry out the carpeting as quickly as possible.
