Vacuuming the carpet in your home might seem like such a simple thing. Most people don’t ever have to take lessons to do this; they just watch other people, especially parents, vacuum the floors and pick up useful information.
However, the vast majority of Toronto homeowners, and even people across the world, make some very common mistakes with regard to vacuuming. The more you know about proper technique, the better it’s going to be for your carpet and your family’s health and well-being.
Mistake #1: Moving the vacuum cleaner too quickly over the carpet.
When you move the vacuum cleaner over the carpeting in a rapid pace, trying to get the job done quickly, it’s not allowing the machine to get much of anything out of the carpeting itself. You need to allow the suction an opportunity to draw out dirt, bacteria, and other allergens from the carpet fiber.
Mistake #2: Not realizing that drawing the machine back is what maximizes cleanliness.
Many people assume that when they push the vacuum cleaner forward it’s doing the job as effectively as when they draw it back. In reality, because of the rotation of the beater bar, it’s going to be far more effective when you pull the vacuum cleaner back toward you slower than when you push it away from you.
Mistake #3: Assuming the carpet is clean after the vacuuming.
This is arguably the most common mistake people make. Just because you vacuum the carpet doesn’t mean it is completely clean. In fact, there could be numerous allergens, pollutants, and particles left behind in the carpeting. That’s because these items are attracted to the carpet fibers and get trapped in there. Not even the most powerful vacuum is going to be able to get it out.
What is the solution?
The best way to ensure that your carpets are cleaned and will last as long as possible is to hire a professional cleaning service to come to your home twice a year and shampoo and clean the carpets thoroughly. If this seems too much for you, at a minimum once a year is necessary to help maximize the longevity of your carpet.
