It’s not always easy to see dirt that accumulates on granite countertops. Keeping them clean also helps to keep them looking their best for a long time. If you don’t keep up with proper cleaning and maintenance of your granite countertops, you may find them breaking down over time and not looking like they should.
Here are four tips that will make it easier for you to maintain your granite countertops in the kitchen of your Toronto home.
Tip #1: Feel the surface first.
Before setting out to wipe down or thoroughly clean your granite countertops, or if you’re not sure whether they’re dirty, use your hand to lightly feel around the surface. This will usually give you a pretty good indication about whether or not the surface is actually covered in dirt, sugar, flour, or other foreign contaminants.
Tip #2: Use a microfiber cloth.
It’s easy to grab the paper towel or sponge, but neither of those are beneficial to granite surfaces. A paper towel can actually scratch the surface of the countertop, causing major problems in the future. A sponge only spreads bacteria and other germs around.
Tip #3: Rely on a pH balanced cleaner.
Avoid window cleaners, all-purpose cleaners, and bleach as these often cause damage to the granite’s seal. A pH balanced detergent works best. Certain dishwashing soaps will also be beneficial, but it’s best to mix it with a little water.
Tip #4: Once you finish cleaning, repeat step one.
Use your hand to move around the surface of the granite countertop and determine if it feels as clean as it looks. This is especially important if you have a darker granite countertop that makes it incredibly difficult to see the dirt and other contaminants that are on it. When you follow these tips, you’ll be enjoying a wonderful and clean kitchen in which to prepare your next meal.
